Abbeydale Grange School, Sheffield

Abbeydale Grange Choir was formed in September 2007 in response to the wonderful opportunity provided by the funding from The Opal Foundation. Over fifty young people auditioned for the choir and there are now 35 enthusiastic members.
Most of the members had no formal music training, and were being trained to develop their voices in order to obtain a good choral blend - and most importantly, sing with passion. Whilst the rehearsals had a strong focus on quality, the main aim was to create a fun atmosphere conducive to learning.
Ian Naylor, from the Sheffield Music Service - with links to Sheffield University - was supporting the school with expert advice and mentoring.
Abbeydale Grange School is a specialist media and arts college, and involved other pupils from the school in this project - ensuring the benefit of the initiative is felt throughout.
In a school with high levels of ethnic diversity, where over seventy languages are spoken, this project brought people together through the medium of music.
