The Opal Choir Project: Background

Choir LogoInspired by the Bafta-winning BBC TWO documentary The Choir, and upholding the beliefs and aims of the Music Manifesto, the Opal Choir Project gave 9 inner-city school choirs from across the country an experience of a lifetime.

"The Opal Choir Project: The Magic of Music "at the Royal Albert Hall, was the culmination of 12 months of preparation under the expert guidance of professional music mentors. The choirs performed in front of a 3,000-strong audience and a panel of esteemed judges, including Classic FM presenter Simon Bates.

The two best performing choirs were awarded with a fully funded trip to The World Choir Games in Austria this July, the biggest and most prestigious event of its kind in the world.

The Opal Choir Project: The Magic of Music promised to be a musical extravaganza, with choirs performing a wide range of music from different genres. The evening was hosted and presented by BBC Songs of Praise presenter Diane Louise Jordan. It included guest performances from the London Metropolitan University Choir and the award-winning “Rat Pack of Opera” TENORS Un LIMITED.

The overall aim of the project was to provide each of the children taking part with a truly memorable experience and a wonderful sense of achievement.

“Music can be magic. It calls for and calls forth all human virtues: imagination, discipline, teamwork, determination. It enriches and inspires.” Music Manifesto
